One long-time border voice, Ben Bergquam, a journalist and political commentator, has shared his observations and investigations of the conditions at the border. In a candid conversation, Bergquam sheds light on the experiences of people who are trying to cross the US border and the challenges faced by both the migrants and the border patrol agents.

Bergquam, known for his on-the-ground reporting, recently visited the US border and witnessed firsthand the overwhelming number of migrants waiting to enter the United States. He spoke to several individuals from various countries, including Venezuela, Haiti, Honduras, and Kyrgyzstan, who shared their journeys and the difficulties they faced along the way. Many of them have been waiting for months in Mexico, hoping to secure an appointment to enter the U.S legally.

Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens attributes the record high apprehensions at the U.S.-Mexico border to two main factors. Firstly, social media and word of mouth have created a perception that it is easier to cross into the U.S. now to await asylum claims and potentially work, thus enticing more people to make the journey.

Secondly, migrant flows have changed from seasonal economic workers to entire families relocating permanently with all their belongings, encouraged by human smugglers who are profiting greatly from the influx. Owens also noted that cartels are exploiting the high volume of crossings to make millions from human smuggling and trafficking, in addition to drug trafficking.

One of the most striking aspects of Bergquam’s account is the sheer number of migrants waiting at the border. He reported that the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency is processing up to 1,500 people daily, but the number of migrants waiting to enter far exceeds that number. The situation is further complicated because many of these individuals have been waiting for months, with some even spending up to seven months in Mexico before attempting to cross the border.

The migrants’ stories are varied. Some traveled from as far as Kyrgyzstan, and others made their way through multiple countries before reaching the U.S.-Mexico border. Many of them expressed frustration with the long wait times and the uncertainty of their future.

Bergquam’s account also highlights the strain of this unprecedented surge on the border patrol agents. These agents are tasked with processing and managing the influx of migrants while ensuring the border’s safety and security. The situation is further exacerbated by the political climate, with debates over immigration policies and the role of the U.S. government in addressing this humanitarian crisis.

Bergquam’s conversation provides a unique and personal perspective on the ongoing situation at the U.S.-Mexico border. His account serves as a reminder of the human toll of the border crisis and the need for a comprehensive and compassionate approach to addressing the challenges faced by both the migrants and the border patrol agents.

In Bergquam’s remarks, he longs for the re-entry of President Donald J. Trump, whose border policies were better for the men and women who enforce the laws at the border.
