Two NYPD officers were shot Sunday night by a Venezuelan who entered the U.S. illegally in 2023. The Biden administration released him into the country and stayed at a taxpayer-funded migrant shelter in New York.
According to media reports, NYC Mayor Eric Adams ignored the fact that the suspect was in the country illegally. Adams, at a press conference about the situation said, “Because of this vest, a young police officer is going home,” after 19-year-old Venezuelan illegal immigrant Bernardo Raul Castro Mata shot two NYC cops early Monday. The officers had attempted to stop Mata for driving the wrong way on a scooter.
The suspect fled on foot for several blocks, allegedly shooting at the officers during the pursuit. One officer was hit in the leg, and another was hit in the vest. The officers returned fire, shooting Mata in the ankle.
Mata, who had been living at a migrant shelter in the former Courtyard Marriott Hotel near LaGuardia Airport, is also a suspect in several ongoing robbery cases.

In 2019, Obama’s former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said that “by any measure, 4,000 apprehensions on our southern border in one day, 100,000 in a month, is a crisis.” That same year, Johnson also said, “I know that 1,000 [illegal crossings] overwhelms the system. I cannot begin to imagine what 4,000/day looks like.” |
