Surge in Northern Border Crossings Raises Concerns: Record Numbers Recorded

According to recent reports, Border Patrol encounters with illegals crossing the northern border of the United States have reached unprecedented levels, poised to set a new record for this fiscal year. Data from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reveals that between October 2023 and April 2024, agents recorded a staggering 9,460 migrant encounters at the US-Canadian border. With five months remaining in the fiscal year, this figure signals a significant escalation in border activity compared to previous years.

Of particular concern is the Swanton sector, encompassing regions of New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire. In April alone, this area saw over 1,400 illegal migrant apprehensions, surpassing the combined totals from fiscal years 2021 and 2022. Residents living in these rural border communities have been eyewitnesses to the unfolding migrant smuggling operations. Many, like Chris Feeley from Swanton, Vermont, have taken to alerting Border Patrol, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

Feeley recounted a chilling encounter from his hunting tree stand, where he observed two men of Mexican descent with backpacks and walking sticks. Despite the shock of the moment, Feeley’s swift action in contacting Border Patrol highlights the proactive role of local communities in addressing the issue. Such incidents underscore the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in combating illegal border crossings.

The surge in northern border crossings can be attributed to several factors. Unlike the southern border, the absence of a physical barrier, limited manpower, and geographical complexities make it an appealing route for migrants. Additionally, recent changes in travel regulations, including exemptions for Mexicans flying to Canada, have contributed to the influx.

Instances of smuggling highlight the lucrative nature of illegal border activities. In a recent case, a US resident was convicted of smuggling three Mexican nationals across the northern border for financial gain. This incident proves the need for enhanced border security measures and cooperation between law enforcement agencies to combat illicit border activities effectively.

As the fiscal year progresses, the unprecedented surge in northern border crossings underscores the pressing need for comprehensive solutions to address this growing challenge. From bolstering border security measures to enhancing interagency cooperation, concerted efforts are required to ensure the integrity of the nation’s borders and safeguard the communities they border.
