President Trump has been declared the winner of the GOP primary in Washington, effectively clinching the Republican presidential nomination and positioning himself for a rematch against President Biden, as reported by Decision Desk HQ, early Wednesday morning.
With projections indicating Trump will secure at least 1,215 delegates, the minimum required for the Republican nod, his victory was imminent. Prior to Tuesday’s primaries, Trump had amassed 1,077 delegates, leaving him needing only 138 more.
Across the GOP nominating contests in Georgia, Hawaii, Mississippi, and Washington state, a total of 161 delegates were up for grabs. While there were no significant primary challenges expected for Trump, following Nikki Haley’s withdrawal from the GOP race last week, there remained some uncertainty over whether the former U.N. ambassador would still garner votes as a form of protest against Trump.
The Tuesday primaries marked the conclusion of a Republican presidential contest that offered few surprises. Despite initially having a crowded field of candidates vying for the nomination, only Trump and Haley remained by the time of the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 23.
Meanwhile, on the Democratic side, Biden secured enough delegates to lock in the Democratic presidential nomination.
